Your Name Is a Birth Certificate: How First Names Reveal the Decade You Were Born
Tell me your first name and, more often than not, I can guess the decade you were born in. Not because names are magic — because they are dated. A Bjørn is almost certainly a Norwegian man born in the 1950s. A Jean is a Frenchman from the post-war years. A Gösta peaked before the Second World War. None of these men were named at random: they were named in a particular year, from the small pool of names that felt right to parents in that year. Two generations later, in the same countries, boys are called Sander, Enzo and Mathias — and the older names have all but vanished from the maternity ward.
A first name is the one piece of identification you carry that you did not choose, cannot easily change, and that quietly encodes when you entered the world. This article shows the effect on real birth-registry data from six countries, and explains the mechanism behind it: the birth cohort.
Two generations, almost no overlap
Start with the single most surprising fact in the data. Take the five most popular boys' names among people born around 1951, and the five most popular among people born around 2006 — roughly two generations apart — in six countries that keep long-running birth registries.

Read across any row and the two lists barely touch. In Norway and France they do not touch at all: not one of the five most popular boys' names of 1951 survives into the 2006 top five, and if you widen the comparison to the full top twenty, the overlap between the 1950s cohort and the 2000s cohort in those two countries is essentially zero. These are not the same names getting reshuffled. They are two completely different sets of names, separated by about fifty years.
The English-speaking countries look a little more stable — Michael clings on in the United States, James in New Zealand and Scotland — because Anglophone boys' names turn over more slowly than Scandinavian or Romance ones. But even there, three or four of every five names have been replaced, and on the girls' side the replacement is close to total in all six countries.
(Two footnotes on the table. Spain's registry publishes by decade of birth, so its two columns are really the 1950s and 2000s cohorts. And "Britain" here means Scotland specifically — more on why below.)
The mechanism: you are named once, and the name stays
Why does a name pin down a decade so precisely? Because naming is a one-time event locked to a birth year, and the fashion in names moves.
Think of everyone born in a single year as a birth cohort. Parents in that year draw their choices from the naming climate of that moment — the saints, kings, film stars, footballers, grandparents and half-heard sounds that feel current. That climate shifts continuously. A name rises, crests, and falls, usually over about twenty to forty years, and once it has fallen it rarely comes back within a lifetime. So each cohort ends up carrying a slightly different signature of names, and because people keep the name they were given, that signature travels with them for the rest of their lives.
The consequence is that a country's living population is a stack of these signatures. The eighty-year-olds are wearing the names of the 1940s; the fifty-year-olds the names of the 1970s; the newborns the names of the 2020s. When you meet a Kjell or a Gerd, you are meeting someone whose name was fashionable in one narrow window and has been quietly announcing their age ever since.
This is also why frequency data tied to a birth year tells you something a plain "most common names in the country" list cannot. A snapshot of everyone alive blends all the cohorts together and hides the age signal; break the same names out by year of birth and the generational fingerprint reappears.
Every country keeps its own "grandfathers' layer"
The names that date a person are specific to each language and culture — there is no universal set of "old names." Each country has its own stratum of names that shout born mid-century:
- Scandinavia:
Bjørn,Svein,Kjell,Gerdin Norway;Göstain Sweden. Short, hard, unmistakably of the 1940s and 50s. A NorwegianKjellwas a top-five name for boys born in 1951; among boys born in the 2000s it is dozens of times rarer. - France:
Jean,Michel,Alain,Philippe.Michelalone accounted for around one in twenty French baby boys in the early 1950s; by the 2000s it was given to almost none. - Spain:
Jose,Antonio,Manuel,Francisco,Juan— the Catholic-calendar staples that dominated the Franco-era decades and receded sharply afterwards. - The Anglosphere:
Robert,Ronald,Donald,Gary,Gordon— the names that carpeted 1950s birth records in the United States, New Zealand and Scotland and now read as distinctly grandfatherly.
None of these were replaced by a single successor. They were replaced by a scatter — and that scatter is itself part of the generational story.
The classics are being evicted, one country at a time
Here is the trend that outranks any individual name. The old names did not just lose the top spot; the very idea of a dominant name is fading.
In the United States, the ten most popular boys' names covered about 25.6% of all boys born around 1975. In 2025 the top ten covered just 7.4% (Social Security Administration). The girls' figure fell from roughly 16.5% to 6.4% over the same span. Half a century ago, a handful of names blanketed the nursery; today the same top ten reaches barely a third as many children. Supporting numbers point the same way: the top 1,000 US names covered over 90% of births in the early 1970s and about 72% in 2025, while the count of distinct names given each year roughly doubled.
This is not an American quirk. In Germany, the ten most popular first names account for only about 10% of all names given (GfdS, 2025). Parents everywhere have dispersed. The practical effect is that "the number one name" and "a common name" have come apart: a name can top the chart today while representing a slice of births that would not have cracked the top ten in 1955. Which decade you were born in is now written not only in which names were popular, but in how popular the popular names were allowed to get.
Noah: the closest thing to a global number one
If the mid-century world had John and Jean and Juan — the same root fragmenting across borders — the 2020s have Noah. It is the strongest cross-border name story in the current data, and it appears independently in registries that count differently and speak different languages.
In 2025, Noah was the number one boys' name in Germany, the Netherlands (its seventh consecutive year at the top), Sweden and most of Australia, and number two in the United States, England and Wales, and France. No other name sits that high in that many unrelated registries at once. Why Noah? Honestly, nobody has proven a cause. It is short, ends in an open vowel, crosses the Christian, Muslim and Jewish lines (Noah/Nuh), and survives being pronounced in German, Dutch, Swedish, French and English without mangling — but those are descriptions of the winner, not proof of why it won. What matters here is the shape of the story: where earlier generations shared a stock of names that each language localised, this generation increasingly shares the exact same spelling.
The undercounting trap: Muhammad
One name breaks the pattern in an instructive way. In 2025, Muhammad was the number one boys' name in England and Wales for the third year running, given to 5,957 boys (Office for National Statistics, released 9 July 2026), ahead of Noah at 4,075.
But registries generally do not merge different spellings of the same name. The ONS counts Muhammad, Mohammed (ranked 20th, 1,712 births) and Mohammad (55th, 895) as three separate names. So Muhammad's number one is entirely real under the stated rule — and simultaneously an undercount of how many boys were actually named after the Prophet. Combine the spellings and the total is far higher; leave them apart and each ranks on its own. Both statements are true at once. The lesson for reading any generational name table is the same: a ranking answers the question its methodology asks, and "most popular name" quietly means "most popular spelling."
Which countries we cover — and the honest limits
Building name profiles by year of birth requires a specific and rare kind of data: counts of each name, broken down by birth year (or at least birth decade) and sex, running back far enough to reach today's older generations. Most countries do not publish this. We have usable birth-cohort data for six:
Norway, the United States, France, Spain, New Zealand and Britain. Even within those six, the boundaries deserve to be stated plainly rather than buried:
- Britain means Scotland only. No open registry publishes name-by-birth-year counts for England and Wales across the full mid-century-to-present window, so the British column leans on Scotland's records. That tilts it toward Scottish tastes — expect names like
LewisandCallumto sit higher than they would in a UK-wide list. - New Zealand's sex split is inferred. The underlying registry publishes names and counts but not the sex of each bearer, so the male/female division is derived rather than official.
- Spain is by decade, not by year. Its rankings resolve to the 1950s, 1960s and so on — fine for a generational story, but a decade wide rather than a year sharp.
- Germany is not covered by generation. There is no official German national registry of first names; the widely quoted German figures come from a language-society survey, not a birth register, and it does not publish the by-birth-year depth needed to profile generations. So while
Noah's 2025 crown in Germany is solid, Germany does not appear in the six-country cohort table above.
We would rather name these gaps than paper over them. A generational name map is only as honest as the registries under it.

Two cautions worth stating. First, birth-registry rankings tell you what parents did in a given year — not who lives in the country today; a name that topped the charts fifty years ago describes a large slice of living people, while today's number one describes only the newest cohort. Second, commercial name sites and aggregators are not registries; where they carry national figures, those figures originated with the agencies above, usually stripped of the methodology notes that make them safe to read. None of the numbers here come from them.
The takeaway
Your first name is a small, permanent artefact of a particular year. It was chosen from the naming climate of your birth cohort, it moved through fashion the way every name does, and it has been quietly reporting your approximate age ever since. That is why Bjørn, Jean and Jose read as one generation and Sander, Enzo and Alejandro as another — and why, across six countries and two generations of birth records, the lists barely overlap at all. The name on your birth certificate really is a kind of certificate: not of who you are, but of when you began.
